Books and lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, music by Kurt Weill, English adaptation by Marc Blitzstein Directed by David M. Jenkins Set in London in the 1800s, THE THREEPENNY OPERA is a musical satire about a notorious bandit who marries a girl much to the chagrin of her father, forcing the peeved patriarch to do everything in his power to imprison his son-in-law. Ahead of its time, the political and social themes in this iconic piece of musical theater get at the corruption of humanity and how it consumes us and forces us to consume one another. Last revived on Broadway in a Tony Award-winning production starring Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper, THE THREEPENNY OPERA must be recognized as the grandfather of musicals like Cabaret and Chicago that show us singing and dancing our way to our own destruction. David M. Jenkins directs with Jeremy Douglass set to return after previously helming LIZZIE’s six-piece band (several of whom also return here to fill out the seven-piece on-stage orchestra) as music director. The Threepenny Opera is is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals. [less-]

A Musical Comedy by Dan Goggin Presented by MAS Community Theatre Directed by Aaron Washington Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth-grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. (Visit the official Nunsense website at www.nunsense.com. 1h 40m / R / Musical

Does The Rocky Horror Picture Show need any introduction? It’s a cultural artifact with unlimited lifespan — it creates new audiences for itself each screening, and will most likely continue to be shown in theatres until the end of linear time. The plot of RHPS basically doesn’t matter (but here it is in brief anyway: an engaged couple get lost and wander to a nearby castle where they are captured, kind of, by a Transylvanian doctor in lingerie and his entourage who are attempting to create a life form but are actually in some cases space aliens – it’s complicated); all that matters is the experience of seeing it. The audience owns the movie now. They sing along, dress in costume, go through lines, perform alongside the film as it plays.

And if you’re a “virgin”, as first-timers are known, this is a perfect opportunity to learn what you’ve been missing all these years: A shadow cast will provide a live pre-show at 10:00pm and audience participation throughout the film. Guests are encouraged to bring their own toilet paper, cards, newspapers, toast and other props – but please, no hot dogs, rice or water guns. For a great audience-participation guide, visit www.badmovies.org/movies/rockyhorror/audience/ (Site contains adult language and content!)Tickets for The Rocky Horror Picture Show are $15 for general admission and $12 for Tampa Theatre Members.Doors & bar open at 9:00pm [less-]

The People, an art exhibition at the Carrollwood Cultural Center features artists’ observations of people in our own time. The artists accepted a challenge to feature art that was about people, more than one. The show is unusual because the subject matter is about human beings, plural, not portraits.  Artists looking outside of themselves and their traditional subjects to focus on People in their art. As a cultural center, we were interested in how artists would interpret people in this present time. The results are amazing. From casual genre elegantly rendered, to the intense joy of a mother catching her child in play, to the neighborhood children playing Dress Up with chickens; The People will prove to be one of the most enjoyable shows this year. The artists have created truly original artworks that that transport us to our own remembrances with each other. Featured artist Linda Hugues with Jo Bertloff, Patricia Callihan, Salvatrice S. Creel, Deanna Dennis, Noah Dunkle, Terry Eisenberg, Carole Flagg, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Terry Klaaren, Elizabeth Mitchell, Lyle Polyak, Diana Ranstrom, Maria Rivera-Pinto, Gainor Roberts, M’rissa Rosenthal, Marie Schadt, and Margret Thomas.
