The Henry B. Plant Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibit, Menus: The Epicurean Experience, opening on March 17, 2017. Please join us on March 17th at 7:00 pm for a lecture by Patrick Dunne, proprietor of Lucullus antiques in New Orleans.  The shop has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Martha Stewart Living, Vogue, and The New York Times.  Dunne is the author of The Epicurean Collector, and has both written for and served as a contributing editor for a number of interior design and lifestyle magazines.  The lecture is free and open to the public. This exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932.  These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience.  We will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience.  Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design.  Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses.  Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate.  Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays such as Independence Day (1898), George Washington’s birthday celebration (1901), Thanksgiving (1905), New Year’s (1912) and Christmas (1911, 1912). The menu is the map that guides diners through their dining experience.  It lays the foundation for what they anticipate their experience to be based on the elaborate dishes served, the number of courses, the detail and extravagance of the menu design, the international elements, and dinner entertainment. Blended with these obvious dining elements are the subtle ingredients of fashion and etiquette and the behind the scenes components of where food comes from and how it is prepared. Menus: The Epicurean Experience opens on March 17th and runs through December 23, 2017.  Entrance to the exhibit is included with admission to the Museum.
This exhibit has been graciously underwritten by Greenberg Traurig, LLC, The Knox Family Foundation, and Dr. and Mrs. Garth Drewry. [less-]

Chroma is a Solo Exhibition that features 15 boldly colorful paintings by Tampa artist Elizabeth Fontaine-Barr, who was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. Primarily working with acrylic and pastel, the flexibility of the medium allows Elizabeth to use gradual shading to soften transitions or create more energetic and fanciful settings in a style she views as “modern expressionism”. Elizabeth’s work is inspired by the sights and colors of nature rather than the urban cityscapes of the “Big Easy”. But just as New Orleans has its own unique culture, her style is distinctly her own and not quite down the straight and narrow. Though her varied palette may appear in the natural landscapes and wildlife that she portrays, colors are often subverted and made to step outside their normal bounds. In tribute to Elizabeth’s singular approach, her paintings have been the subject of both juried and solo exhibits garnering awards as well as accolades. Whether portraying scenes from her travels or more locally inspired settings, her works have become a part of treasured private collections stretching from Hawaii to New York. [less-]

George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala and a bikini worn by Princess Leia. Presenting more than 60 of the finest hand-crafted costumes from the first seven films in the Star Wars series, the exhibition uncovers the challenges, the intricate processes and the remarkable artistry of Lucas, the concept artists and costume designers. The costumes reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the story. [less-]

The Tampa Museum of Art will present a survey of paintings and works on paper by artist Mernet Larsen (American, b. 1940). Her work alludes to a range of art historical references, from 12th-century Japanese scrolls, 15th-century Italian painting, to the geometric abstractions of Russian artist El Lissitzky (1890-1941). Her early abstract compositions, such as Duccio’s Saint (1988) in the Tampa Museum of Art’s collection, reflect her ongoing formal explorations of experiential time, space, and color. Later figurative paintings, including the recent work Raft (2017), depict ordinary moments and activities—from reading in bed, attending casual dinners, to participating in faculty meetings. The exhibition Mernet Larsen: Getting Measured will feature never-before-seen early drawings, a select group of studies and works on paper, and a survey of paintings from the 1960s to the present. Larsen’s art resides in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. The artist divides her time between Tampa and New York City. [less-]

Give the gift of fine-art photography this holiday season! The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts will open its annual Photography Benefit Sale Monday in the Community Gallery. The Benefit Sale gives FMoPA members the chance to display and sell their work within a museum setting, and it gives museum visitors a rare opportunity to view—with the option of purchasing—work produced by local photographers. “Every year we look forward to the Photography Benefit Sale because we are able to host many different photographers in one space and build the community we have at FMoPA,” said FMoPA Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D. Fifty-four artists and more than 140 pieces will be included in the exhibition. All of the photographs are for sale. Artists set their own prices and will retain 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their work. “It’s an excellent opportunity to purchase unique holiday gifts and support local artists at the same time,” said Carrier. The exhibition will be on display through January 26, 2018. [less-]

The exhibition looks at both the Cuban eye and at its visitors’ eye and spans a period of time that is historic: the early 1930’s to present day. Beginning with Walker Evans and concluding with the work of Raúl Cañibano, we take a walk through time and space. They are the monumental bookends for our stroll. Walker Evans first photographed Cuba in the thirties. Raúl Cañibano is today’s masterful Cuban equivalent. Both have directed their gaze toward the nitty gritty of Cuban everyday life: the posed dockworker, the striding school boy. They look out at us with their body language that speaks volumes about the human condition; which without saying a word tells us everything. [less-]

[less-]

Iconic costumes from ―a galaxy far, far away are presented in the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. Culled from the collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Star Wars and the Power of Costume is a partnership of the museum, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Lucasfilm.

[less-]
