TECO Public Art Gallery in downtown Tampa is proud to present Creative Loafing’s 2016 Best Local Artist Beth Kokol in her first Solo Exhibition in downtown Tampa. Titled Indigo Blue, Beth will exhibit her Painting and Mixed Media work March 2 - April 30, 2017. “This body of work spans several years and encompasses many different mediums. Much of the work is Acrylic on Canvas and is a direct reflection of my move to a home on the water. The work that came from a trip to China includes Monotypes and Acrylic skins on watercolor paper and is more landscape in nature. Also in this collection are several Mixed Media pieces that include Papyrus Paper that I made and in some cases it is collaged with suede and silk from some very old furniture that comes from my husband’s family.” Beth Kokol will be present for downtown’s Fourth Friday Event on March 24 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm at TECO Public Art Gallery. Beth will lead a Talk & Tour with visitors and talk about her work, her inspirations and take questions. This event is FREE and open to the public. Please join us. [less-]

Not Here But There is an exhibition of new photography and sculptural work by Mark Joseph Oliver.  The artworks in this show explore the role that location serves as a monument to the past, present, and future.  Viewers can experience a distilled moment in time through partially masked black and white photography of Norwegian landscapes and witness a narrative connecting past and present through the installation Whale Fall; a completely white boat skeleton resting upon a bed of salt on the floor of the gallery. The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) is pleased to present Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers. This original, award-winning exhibition created by The FHM showcases the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. As portrayed in the popular film Defiance, the three brothers, Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok, Belarus. In the forest, they formed a community of men, women, and children. Through the brothers' leadership, the group survived starvation, harsh winters, and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. The Bielski Brothers Jewish partisan unit or otriad, as known in Russian, was unique. While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst, the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia. For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests. Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion. The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. This exhibition tells their story. This exhibition is presented nationally by Bank of America and on display at The Florida Holocaust Museum from January 14, 2017 through June 18, 2017. [less-]

Greg Smith is a multidisciplinary artist whose work often involves the “artifice mechanic,” a character trying to “create something, trying to structure his environment, but who’s also kind of hapless, and, in the end, probably doomed.” Smith has a PhD in Physics, and indeed his work explores the big questions of our experience, albeit in humorous and home-made methods. Based in New York City, he is best known for his videos, though he also produces installations and sculpture. His innovative work explores the big questions of our experience, using humorous, homemade methods. Smith’s video Breakdown Lane (2013) functions as both an exploration of the archetypal journey inherent to the road movie genre and as a reflection on the video medium itself. Throughout the absurd narrative, Smith rigorously attempts to maneuver his improbable automobile out of the breakdown lane. Greg Smith earned a PhD in Physics from Harvard University and an MFA from Hunter College. He has exhibited widely, at institutions including Artists Space, New York; McNay Art  Museum, San Antonio; and Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro. He received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013. Smith currently resides in New York City. Critic Sarah Goffstein has written that “beyond optical accidents, the makeshift mechanics of Smith’s vehicle put the artist at risk…It is hard not to expect electrocution or explosions.” The video is shown on an improvised theater in the center of his installation and was selected by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill to complement The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip. “Joy rides, voyages of discovery, surveys, wanderings, migrations, polemics, travel diaries, and assessment of the nation. Is America even imaginable without the road trip?” — David Campany The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility, freedom, discover, and escape — a place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. The Open Road explores the photographic road trip as a genre. It traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day. Beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal odyssey, The Americans, and including such renowned work as Ed Rushcha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Inge Morath’s The Road to Reno, Lee Friedlander’s American Monument, Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York. David Campany and Denise Wolff, curators. Dig brings together recent works by Mr. Labauvie in his signature media of steel and pastels. The theme of the ruin runs throughout, as he seems to take on the role of archaeologist, digging into the earth’s histories to try to understand their effect on current events. The formal explorations of interdisciplinary artist Dominique Labauvie are rooted in both material and a highly developed relationship to philosophies of the drawn line. He has written: “When a line bends, it slows down; as it expands, it suddenly appears as a flat surface – it carves out its presence in space like a black hole. The ground (any ground: earth, wood or stone) hosts the forged lines as the landscape that for centuries has been mapped by rivers, roads, and highways. The line informs us about the absent forms, as only the missing remain in our memories, our books, and in our images. The line attests to the desire of thought.”
Born in Strasbourg, France, Mr. Labauvie has resided in Tampa since 1998 with his wife, master printer Erika Greenberg-Schneider, founder of Bleu Acier studio and gallery. He earned his BA in literature and philosophy from the Academy of Colmar and studied art history at the University of Strasbourg. He concentrated on sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, France. He has shown his work internationally. He is represented in the collections of the Musée des arts décoratifs, Palais du Louvre, in Paris; Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Céret, France; and closer to home, the MFA and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Mr. Labauvie has been commissioned to create large-scale public sculptures in Paris, Dijon, and Tampa. This is his first Spotlight exhibition at the MFA, organized by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. [less-]

Bamboozle Cafe will feature the art of twelve artists of the North Tampa Arts League (NTAL). The opening reception, Tuesday, March 7, 6-9 pm, will provide complimentary appetizers, wine and tea tasting. Downtown Arts Invasion is a full palette of a dozen artists who present their art in an array of talent in watercolors, oils and photographs. NTAL is a not-for-profit organization which strives to “develop, nurture and support the arts and the artists of North Tampa by working in concert with community leaders to make North Tampa a vibrant art community.” The exhibiting artists approach their art in unique ways. Virginia Butler “paints subjects that I have a passion for; my work has accomplished it’s purpose when a viewer feels that same passion.” Dorothy Banker “finds beauty in an old forgotten vehicles, barns,  villages or landscapes.” Dorothy strives to capture our rapidly disappearing rural areas, preserving memories on canvas. David Beebe and wife Patricia travel throughout the world in their pursuit of capturing images: David’s in photography and Patricia’s in watercolors.  David’s photography of wildlife, landscapes and our extraordinary secretive animal world provides the viewer with scenes rarely witnessed.  Patricia captures the personal and provocative aspect of the isolated and familiar places the couple visits. Carla Wilkins has a background in teaching art in public schools from New Mexico to Atlanta and her hometown of Tampa. Of her abstract work she states, “My escape from our chaotic world has always been found in outdoor adventures where patterns found in nature's elements catch the eye and calm the mind.” Photographer Jan Roser has striven for over 30 years to find new perspectives on nature, natural and cultivated flora. She also enjoys manipulating her images through computer software. Self-taught artist Paula Noblitt’s  states, “The voice of the painting reflects the artist’s mood, and vice versa.”  Her work reflects dreamy, soft and abstract backgrounds in highly pigmented inks or liquid acrylics. Joan Garcia is inspired by the atmosphere, community and wildlife. She admits to “a restless spirit, focusing on the combination of light, shadow, mystery and beauty that create depth, building up my canvas in layers. The varied and exciting exhibit also features the art of Dore Anderson, Monica Leon, Lynn Rattray and Thomas-Margaret. The goal of all artists is to “always create an impactful result while highlighting the glory of nature.” The Bamboozle Cafe Gallery is curated by Tim Gibbons and Jayne Lisbeth of Funky As A Monkey Art Studio. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Judy pursued her early art through painting. She then fell in love with graphic design, especially the etching and relief process of Printmaking by Marvin Jones. “It was a great experience I will never forget” Judy states.  Her printmaking career took off from that experience. Throughout Judy’s life her vocation has been Graphic Design in the world of advertising and publishing, which brought her to Tampa 20 years ago. Judy’s printmaking, well defined and expertly created,  covers the range of animal life, sea life  and religious expression. Judy has shown her work extensively throughout Tampa and St. Petersburg and has received great success in her calligraphy, printmaking and artistry in all areas. Judy also teaches printmaking classes at the Life Enrichment Center.  She has a large following for her artistry and her adeptness in providing her printmaking skills to others. Judy currently lives in Land O’Lakes where she produces her lovely art in her home studio. No opening reception is planned at this time.   The curators for the Bamboozle Tea Lounge art Gallery are Tim Gibbons and Jayne Lisbeth of  Funky As A Monkey Art Studio.  Funky As A Monkey Art Studio are passionate supporters of the arts and look forward to continuing to promote and support the local Tampa Bay area arts community. They love to share the stories behind their pieces, and we all know that some of the best things in life come with a great story… not from a big store. Then stay a while… have a bevvy on the patio, grab a bite from our food trucks or other budding chefs, watch one of the live acts or just have a hookah and people watch. Wander inside, listen to our DJs, get a reading from one of our fortune tellers or just meet some friends. Popped-up on the lot adjacent to Red Star Rock Bar, with over 30 vendors, Monday Night Moonlight Market is the bigger monthly-version of weekly Vagabond Gita created by Samberlah. [less-]

The Henry B. Plant Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibit, Menus: The Epicurean Experience, opening on March 17, 2017. Please join us on March 17th at 7:00 pm for a lecture by Patrick Dunne, proprietor of Lucullus antiques in New Orleans.  The shop has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Martha Stewart Living, Vogue, and The New York Times.  Dunne is the author of The Epicurean Collector, and has both written for and served as a contributing editor for a number of interior design and lifestyle magazines.  The lecture is free and open to the public. This exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932.  These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience.  We will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience.  Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design.  Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses.  Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate.  Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays such as Independence Day (1898), George Washington’s birthday celebration (1901), Thanksgiving (1905), New Year’s (1912) and Christmas (1911, 1912). The menu is the map that guides diners through their dining experience.  It lays the foundation for what they anticipate their experience to be based on the elaborate dishes served, the number of courses, the detail and extravagance of the menu design, the international elements, and dinner entertainment. Blended with these obvious dining elements are the subtle ingredients of fashion and etiquette and the behind the scenes components of where food comes from and how it is prepared. Menus: The Epicurean Experience opens on March 17th and runs through December 23, 2017.  Entrance to the exhibit is included with admission to the Museum.
This exhibit has been graciously underwritten by Greenberg Traurig, LLC, The Knox Family Foundation, and Dr. and Mrs. Garth Drewry. [less-]

Titled Indigo Blue, Beth will exhibit her Painting and Mixed Media work March 2 - April 30, 2017. “This body of work spans several years and encompasses many different mediums.

Image: Justine Kurland (American, b. 1969), Claire, 8th Ward, 2012, Archival pigment print, © Justine Kurland, courtesy Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York.
[less-]

Monday Night Moonlight Market is a pop-up market taking place in Seminole Heights featuring local handcrafters, artisans and budding chefs. The Monday Night Moonlight Market is hosted on the LAST Monday of the month in Seminole Heights. An open-air market with a desire to serve our community by connecting creative locals with those who crave unique finds and one-off wonders. Offering an alternative to the faceless transactions of mainstream retail, Moonlight Market gives you the chance meet your local artisans, hand crafters, vintage vendors, up cyclers, recyclers, and artists.

[less-]
