Starting with traditionally flat slabs of paint (either acrylic or oil) spread on large palettes, Albritton scrapes and peels the color from the confines of a flat surface to create three-dimensional, tactile geological sculptures. Roughly manipulating the blobs, wrinkles, ribbons, chunks, goops, layers, and rich textures, she shuffles these singular pieces into a larger composition that protrudes from the surface. By capturing a moment in textural excitement, her work compels the viewer to touch, to further their visual experience other than how we typically view works through computer or phone screens. Albritton is a Tampa-based artist.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting with a minor in ceramics from Savannah College of Art and Design.  She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the southern United States and will be included in “Skyway: A Contemporary Collaboration,” Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete, Florida in June 2017. [less-]

Afshan believes art is a universal language through which a message can be portrayed to any audience in the world without being translated. Born in Jehlum, Pakistan, Afshan Kohari moved with her family to Bangladesh at a young age. There she spent 10 years surrounded by forest and mountains, within walking distance of the ocean. Sadly, in the war of 1971, she and her family were forced to leave in a rush, with only their memories. They moved to Karachi, Pakistan where she later received her bachelor's degree in art from St. Joseph's Convent College. Talking about her painting, Afshan says, “I want to show peace, serenity and the tranquility of nature to the world through my art as I am a peaceful person myself.  My work in art is my dialogue with God, and my work of nature is a window to God's majestic beauty. I truly discovered my passion for art after the death of my oldest daughter. Painting on canvas felt like bandaging the wounds of my soul, and art became a way to not only express myself, but also heal myself.” During her exhibition, Afshan Kohari will host a Talk & Tour as part of downtown’s Fourth Friday event on Friday, July 28th from 5:30- 8:00 pm at TECO Public Art Gallery. She will talk about her technique, her inspirations and share her experiences and her passion for painting. [less-]

The Henry B. Plant Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibit, Menus: The Epicurean Experience, opening on March 17, 2017. Please join us on March 17th at 7:00 pm for a lecture by Patrick Dunne, proprietor of Lucullus antiques in New Orleans.  The shop has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Martha Stewart Living, Vogue, and The New York Times.  Dunne is the author of The Epicurean Collector, and has both written for and served as a contributing editor for a number of interior design and lifestyle magazines.  The lecture is free and open to the public. This exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932.  These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience.  We will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience.  Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design.  Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses.  Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate.  Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays such as Independence Day (1898), George Washington’s birthday celebration (1901), Thanksgiving (1905), New Year’s (1912) and Christmas (1911, 1912). The menu is the map that guides diners through their dining experience.  It lays the foundation for what they anticipate their experience to be based on the elaborate dishes served, the number of courses, the detail and extravagance of the menu design, the international elements, and dinner entertainment. Blended with these obvious dining elements are the subtle ingredients of fashion and etiquette and the behind the scenes components of where food comes from and how it is prepared. Menus: The Epicurean Experience opens on March 17th and runs through December 23, 2017.  Entrance to the exhibit is included with admission to the Museum.
This exhibit has been graciously underwritten by Greenberg Traurig, LLC, The Knox Family Foundation, and Dr. and Mrs. Garth Drewry. [less-]

For generations, LEGO has inspired the creative imaginations of millions with the iconic, colorful blocks’ endless options to construct masterworks. Former NYC corporate lawyer Nathan Sawaya recognized the creative possibilities of the small plastic “bricks” and has created more than 100 works of LEGO art for a one-of-a-kind exhibition, the “Art of the Brick.” His award-winning work has traveled to more than 80 cities worldwide; for the first time it will come to Tampa June 23 courtesy of Jeff and Penny Vinik. The exhibition features original sculptures, as well as re-imagined versions of iconic art masterpieces such as Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, made entirely from LEGO bricks. Visitors will also be able to see a 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton, come face-to-face with a giant skull and construct their own creations in the hands-on “Brickyard” area. Check out the Art of the Brick FAQ on hours, parking, accessibility and more.
The “Art of the Brick” is made possible by the The Vinik Family Foundation and is its second annual family-friendly summer event. There is no charge to attend. The Foundation brought the highly popular “The Beach” to Amalie Arena in 2016.

Funky As A Monkey Art Studio & The Creative Life Project new art exhibit: “Pawprints: Dog Days of Summer” featuring artists: Rolando Bardaji, Tim Gibbons and Gabriela Valencia Pinellas Ale Works, PAW ART PULSE announces the latest exhibit Pawprints: Dog Days of Summer, in celebration of  the rise of the Dog Star and summer heat! Our newest artist, Gabriella Valencia is not new to art. Her studio, Gabriela Valencia Art Studio and Gallery, is located in St. Pete Beach. Gabriela is an international artist from Ecuador, living in the St. Petersburg area for the last nine years. Her art reflects a  love of life experiences, Florida themes, and the world of dogs. Rolando Bardaji is another stellar artist working in acrylics to produce his beautiful abstracts tinged with political overtures and important aspects of his interesting life. Rolando was born in Havana, Cuba until he and his family emigrated to the United States in 1960 when he was ten years old. Rolando earned his BA of Fine Arts at Hunter College, NY.. Rolando states, “I follow the tradition of socially conscious artists of Western Art, Robert Motherwell, Rauschenberg, Edward Hopper and Francisco Goya.”  Rolando’s abstract art is an interwoven mix of his vivid imagination, form and is reminiscent of musical lines and scores.  The darkness of his work can also be compared to Goya, one of Rolando’s favorite artists. Rolando currently lives in Tampa where he has exhibited his art extensively and has a large following of fellow artists and friends. Tim Gibbons is a well-known artist and art instructor, having taught in Tampa for over 40 years. He also curates the art galleries at local restaurants and breweries in downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg. This exhibit features Tim’s most recent work.  Humor, sci-fi, cosmology and his love of Aztec culture is infused into the exhibit, portrayed adroitly on his fresh canvases. Tim’s never-ending imagination, his prolific talent and his constantly evolving new art is combined in this exploding display of his most recent work. [less-]

Fearless Fibre comes from an creative collective of 6 wise artists. Barbara Forgione's 12 sets of fearless girls from California to Harajuku on silk banners greet visitors with their unique styles from punk to cultural heritage. The show embodies a golden thread of hope for our world.  Dr. Barbara Kazanis explains that Fearless Fibre is created in that moment in the artistic process when no one is in charge. Process and experimentation  are crucial to these artists' journeys. Kazanis works with the alchemy of the elements: Minerals, acids, heat, water, time. Carolyn Kossar peeks our curiosity with her woven surprises as she co-creates with the natural. Elizabeth Mitchell, the curator of Fearless Fibre, works in spontaneous expression, lyrical narratives, and prayers for an earth restored. Sarah Butz captures the resurrection of life after annihilation. Mei -Ling St. Leger has created a natural harmony with her designs on silk, they are like shrouds for the earth's beauty. Show Runs through August 26. Artist's Reception Friday, July 28, 6-8 pm. Eye to Eye, featuring paintings by Michael Crabb and Jonathan Herbert as they explore their processes into abstraction. Michael Crabb, Editor of Working Title Magazine, features a series of small serene abstracts. The chunky canvases suggest mysterious windows with many layers of paint and bits of calm refreshment that peek through the cracks.  Jonathan Herbert has three distinct sets of paintings: a rich set of bold landscapes with thick, passionate brushwork, A mystical series where  Jonathan whips up the surface in pure pigment and high drama, and the newest series where he turns completely away from the pictorial to portray primal truths in bold abstractions. The exhibition, which runs through mid-September, will feature fine-art photographs from 12 prominent female photographers, including Dorothea Lange, Mary Ellen Mark, Judy Dater and Imogen Cunningham. “It is important that we share photography’s different perspectives, especially when considering groups which have been systemically marginalized throughout history,” said FMoPA Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D. The featured photographers represent different eras, styles, and techniques, but they all share the same subject: men. By switching the traditional roles of the male artist and the female subject, the collection flips the male-dominated narrative of the art world and establishes an individual space for female artists. “Many women photographers have inspired me through their dedication to the medium,” said Carol Henry, the exhibition’s curator and one of the contributing artists. “I was curious how we, as women photographers, had achieved success and how we integrated men into our work.” Henry will speak about her work and the curatorial process at 6 p.m. on June 23 at the museum as part of FMoPA’s Fourth Friday lecture series.

[less-]
