TECO Public Art Gallery presents Marilyn Binder Silverman showcasing new paintings in her first Solo Exhibition in downtown Tampa. Titled ‘Cityscape”, Marilyn is showing 19 new oil and acrylic paintings opening May 1 - June 30. This exhibition was inspired by a recent trip to Chicago and the, “stunning architectural design that resonates throughout the city. The reflections of the buildings, the angles of the structures and the variations in light, present a constantly changing landscape that I wanted to explore further. In New York City, I visited the Guggenheim Museum where I was captivated by the architectural lines that never end. Having lived in a big city, these connections inform my practice.” Marilyn is a resident of South Tampa. She says here at home, “I focused on the beauty of the buildings in Tampa Bay. Our city possesses a beauty in the architecture that makes up our urban environment.  I enjoy refining complex designs into rudimentary forms using interesting and vivid colors. The emphasis is on painting the perspective of the buildings in my abstract style.” She paints in oil and acrylic and her style and intense hues reflect her free spirit and enthusiasm for life. She sees the world in vibrant colors and she expresses the spontaneity of energy and color that appear all around us. “I have one word of advice – When out in the city, don’t look down at the sidewalk. Look up at the Cityscape and experience the drama of the world that surrounds you.” [less-]

Starting with traditionally flat slabs of paint (either acrylic or oil) spread on large palettes, Albritton scrapes and peels the color from the confines of a flat surface to create three-dimensional, tactile geological sculptures. Roughly manipulating the blobs, wrinkles, ribbons, chunks, goops, layers, and rich textures, she shuffles these singular pieces into a larger composition that protrudes from the surface. By capturing a moment in textural excitement, her work compels the viewer to touch, to further their visual experience other than how we typically view works through computer or phone screens. Albritton is a Tampa-based artist.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting with a minor in ceramics from Savannah College of Art and Design.  She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the southern United States and will be included in “Skyway: A Contemporary Collaboration,” Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete, Florida in June 2017. [less-]

Viewing the artwork of Laine Nixon can be a transcendental experience. Nixon uses acrylic paint, watercolor and gouache on canvas or paper, to produce large, colorful abstract paintings. Her deft hand helps to create the illusion of three-dimensional objects protruding from a flat surface that challenge the viewer’s perception and alter the senses all the while providing a pleasing aesthetic experience. Nixon is a visual artist based in Sarasota, Florida. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Most recently, she was awarded the 2016/2017 John Ringling Towers Fund individual artist grant which includes a residency at the Hermitage Artist Retreat. [less-]

Dig brings together recent works by Mr. Labauvie in his signature media of steel and pastels. The theme of the ruin runs throughout, as he seems to take on the role of archaeologist, digging into the earth’s histories to try to understand their effect on current events. The formal explorations of interdisciplinary artist Dominique Labauvie are rooted in both material and a highly developed relationship to philosophies of the drawn line. He has written: “When a line bends, it slows down; as it expands, it suddenly appears as a flat surface – it carves out its presence in space like a black hole. The ground (any ground: earth, wood or stone) hosts the forged lines as the landscape that for centuries has been mapped by rivers, roads, and highways. The line informs us about the absent forms, as only the missing remain in our memories, our books, and in our images. The line attests to the desire of thought.”
Born in Strasbourg, France, Mr. Labauvie has resided in Tampa since 1998 with his wife, master printer Erika Greenberg-Schneider, founder of Bleu Acier studio and gallery. He earned his BA in literature and philosophy from the Academy of Colmar and studied art history at the University of Strasbourg. He concentrated on sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, France. He has shown his work internationally. He is represented in the collections of the Musée des arts décoratifs, Palais du Louvre, in Paris; Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Céret, France; and closer to home, the MFA and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Mr. Labauvie has been commissioned to create large-scale public sculptures in Paris, Dijon, and Tampa. This is his first Spotlight exhibition at the MFA, organized by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. [less-]

The Henry B. Plant Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibit, Menus: The Epicurean Experience, opening on March 17, 2017. Please join us on March 17th at 7:00 pm for a lecture by Patrick Dunne, proprietor of Lucullus antiques in New Orleans.  The shop has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Martha Stewart Living, Vogue, and The New York Times.  Dunne is the author of The Epicurean Collector, and has both written for and served as a contributing editor for a number of interior design and lifestyle magazines.  The lecture is free and open to the public. This exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932.  These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience.  We will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience.  Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design.  Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses.  Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate.  Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays such as Independence Day (1898), George Washington’s birthday celebration (1901), Thanksgiving (1905), New Year’s (1912) and Christmas (1911, 1912). The menu is the map that guides diners through their dining experience.  It lays the foundation for what they anticipate their experience to be based on the elaborate dishes served, the number of courses, the detail and extravagance of the menu design, the international elements, and dinner entertainment. Blended with these obvious dining elements are the subtle ingredients of fashion and etiquette and the behind the scenes components of where food comes from and how it is prepared. Menus: The Epicurean Experience opens on March 17th and runs through December 23, 2017.  Entrance to the exhibit is included with admission to the Museum.
This exhibit has been graciously underwritten by Greenberg Traurig, LLC, The Knox Family Foundation, and Dr. and Mrs. Garth Drewry. [less-]

Woke! brings together recent work by William Villalongo and Mark Thomas Gibson, artists and the curators of Black Pulp!. The term “woke” is contemporary American vernacular terminology for acute awareness, particularly in reference to the socio-political contexts we inhabit. Woke! presents works made over the past two years, a time when the influence of the hyper-visuality of police violence upon Black bodies and the cultural currents of the Black Lives Matter movement informed new narratives in their practice. They traverse the psychic and spiritual landscape of Black erasure through narrative-figural styles; often negotiating high and low forms of image making. Limited notions of the illustrative tradition’s ability to take on grand narrative or serious content is confronted, questioned and overturned by these works. Villalongo and Gibson address perennial change, biology, protest and revolution in highly contrasting ways, opening up pathways to engage the difficult realities of American history and culture. Woke! calls on the viewer to reorient themselves to current cultural inequities and their reverberations on how we imagine ourselves from the inside out. Woke! is organized by USF Contemporary Art Museum. The exhibition, which runs through mid-September, will feature fine-art photographs from 12 prominent female photographers, including Dorothea Lange, Mary Ellen Mark, Judy Dater and Imogen Cunningham. “It is important that we share photography’s different perspectives, especially when considering groups which have been systemically marginalized throughout history,” said FMoPA Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D. The featured photographers represent different eras, styles, and techniques, but they all share the same subject: men. By switching the traditional roles of the male artist and the female subject, the collection flips the male-dominated narrative of the art world and establishes an individual space for female artists. “Many women photographers have inspired me through their dedication to the medium,” said Carol Henry, the exhibition’s curator and one of the contributing artists. “I was curious how we, as women photographers, had achieved success and how we integrated men into our work.” Henry will speak about her work and the curatorial process at 6 p.m. on June 23 at the museum as part of FMoPA’s Fourth Friday lecture series. Centre Gallery is pleased to present Contruct, a group show including artists based out of Dunedin, Sarasota, St. Petersburg and Tampa. This exhibit aims to showcase the ways in which 16 different artists from the Greater Tampa Bay region find meaning in the architecture of nature, memory, place and society. As Tampa Bay continues to grow rapidly, there is a need for collaboration across our waterways. Building our world is a complicated affair involving thousands of years of accumulated experience and knowledge. This exhibit also intends to tie in to a broader movement towards collaboration between the region's art communities and its development communities by fostering reflection about where we've been and conversation about where we will head. The artists include Caitlin Albritton, Catherine Bergmann, Robin Perry Dana, Janos Enyedi, David Erdman, Bryce Hudson, Kenny Jensen, Nin McQuillen, Chad Mize, Laine Nixon, Charles Parkhill, Gabriel Ramos, Jan Richardson, Nathan Skiles, Patricia Sriram, and Christopher Wharton. Our opening reception, DesART, will be the first Monday of the show June 26 from 12-1 pm. Dessert and refreshments will be provided. The gallery will be open Monday thru Thursday, 11 am – 3 pm. The closing reception will be held on Thursday, July 7 from 7-9 pm. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. All Centre Gallery exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public. [less-]

This exhibition is not only a celebration of artistic practice in Tampa Bay but also an exercise in collaboration as it is shared between three institutions: the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota; the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; and the Tampa Museum of Art. Working together, curators from these institutions will provide context for the diversity of art being made in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas, and Sarasota Counties within the past year. After an open call for artwork, nearly 300 entries were culled down to 57 artists. Final selections were made by curators from each institution as well as guest juror Diana Nawi, Associate Curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Skyway artists on view by museum:

[less-]
