Tessellations Inspired by M.C. Escher is a collaboration between the Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida, the Hillsborough Community College Dale Mabry Campus Math Department and Gallery 221@HCC. Members of the Dali community and math students of Kathryn Pantelis and Joanne Kakascik Dye were encouraged to create a tessellated work of art based upon the mathematical concepts found in the artworks of M.C. Escher (1898-1972). The resulting juried exhibition consists of 60 works of art that were culled from 250 entries and includes works on paper, works on canvas, metal sculpture, painted glass and clay. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who created over 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings, and over 2,000 sketches and drawings over his lifetime.  His affinity for tessellations, one or more geometric shapes tiling a plane with no overlays or gaps, first came into light in 1922 during a visit to Alhambra, a 14th century Moorish castle in Grenada, Spain. It is this architectural division of planes as well as natural symmetries that continued to inspire his work. Although he had no mathematical training, his work is well-known amongst scientists and mathematicians for its mathematical structure. [less-]

Now in its 17th year, the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival is an annual event which promotes African American arts and culture in the Tampa Bay area, and Hillsborough Community College is proud to be a collaborator in this endeavor.  Each year Gallery 221@HCC offers an art exhibition to coincide with events planned by the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival.  This year we are proud to share the artwork of Delita Martin. Gallery Reception: Thursday, January 19, 2017, 5 -7 p.m. Working from oral traditions, as well as vintage and family photographs as a source of inspiration, Martin’s work explores the power of the narrative impulse. Her process of layering various printmaking, drawing, sewing, collaging, and painting techniques allow her to create portraits that fuse the real and the fantastic. She combines signs and symbols to create a visual language which when combined with oral storytelling offers other identities and other narratives for women of color. [less-]

The Gasparilla invasion takes over the Henry B. Plant Museum! Join us for an exhibit on the rich history of Tampa’s oldest and most fun-loving community festival. The new exhibit, Gasparilla: A Tampa Tradition explores Tampa’s premier party, attended by a motley crew of the famous and infamous, the beautiful people and bad dudes.  Learn more about the early Gasparilla parades and enjoy vintage photographs from 1904 to the present.  Also featured this year is a newly conserved 1926 Gasparilla Queen’s gown created by famed African American fashion designer Ann Cone Lowe, and worn by Katherine Broderus. Gasparilla: A Tampa Tradition will run from January 13th to February 26th, 2017 and is underwritten by Lauren C. Stallings and C. Norman Stallings, Jr. and the Henry B. Plant Museum Society. In addition to early memorabilia and original gowns worn by former Gasparilla royalty, visitors can enjoy film coverage on the celebration.  "Memories of Gasparilla Festivals" includes scenes from the 1920s and reveals pirate capers and images of early parades.  This film is from the private collection of the Howell family. It is narrated by John Boushall, III; H.L. Culbreath, Jr.; L.G. "Ted" Delavergne, Jr.; Jerry E. Fogarty; George B. Howell, III; Fred R. Martin, III; Mary Alsbrook Smith and Frances Thomas Toole.  Film footage from Joseph V. Reineman describing the life of a pirate on Invasion Day will also be shown continuously. Over the years, the original Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla has been joined by dozens of new krewes (social clubs), all of which contribute to the general merriment and community pride of the occasion. The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) is pleased to present Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers. This original, award-winning exhibition created by The FHM showcases the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. As portrayed in the popular film Defiance, the three brothers, Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok, Belarus. In the forest, they formed a community of men, women, and children. Through the brothers' leadership, the group survived starvation, harsh winters, and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. The Bielski Brothers Jewish partisan unit or otriad, as known in Russian, was unique. While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst, the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia. For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests. Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion. The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. This exhibition tells their story. This exhibition is presented nationally by Bank of America and on display at The Florida Holocaust Museum from January 14, 2017 through June 18, 2017. [less-]

Greg Smith is a multidisciplinary artist whose work often involves the “artifice mechanic,” a character trying to “create something, trying to structure his environment, but who’s also kind of hapless, and, in the end, probably doomed.” Smith has a PhD in Physics, and indeed his work explores the big questions of our experience, albeit in humorous and home-made methods. Based in New York City, he is best known for his videos, though he also produces installations and sculpture. His innovative work explores the big questions of our experience, using humorous, homemade methods. Smith’s video Breakdown Lane (2013) functions as both an exploration of the archetypal journey inherent to the road movie genre and as a reflection on the video medium itself. Throughout the absurd narrative, Smith rigorously attempts to maneuver his improbable automobile out of the breakdown lane. Greg Smith earned a PhD in Physics from Harvard University and an MFA from Hunter College. He has exhibited widely, at institutions including Artists Space, New York; McNay Art  Museum, San Antonio; and Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro. He received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013. Smith currently resides in New York City. Critic Sarah Goffstein has written that “beyond optical accidents, the makeshift mechanics of Smith’s vehicle put the artist at risk…It is hard not to expect electrocution or explosions.” The video is shown on an improvised theater in the center of his installation and was selected by Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill to complement The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip. Clayton Galleries will open its 2017 season with a one-person exhibition: “Port Side: Paintings by Laura Waller.” There will be an opening reception for the artist on Friday, January 27th, from 7pm to 9pm. Waller, a Tampa-based artist and Florida resident since childhood, has focused on working waterfronts in Florida and Maine for the past ten years. Port Tampa Bay has been of specific interest to her because of the massive scale of the freighters, cranes, docks and forklifts. “The landscape at industrial marine ports, with its rust and grit and the worn, aged surfaces of the ships docked at port are of primary interest.” Waller explains in her artist statement for her current show. “Vessels serve as a metaphor and provide the narrative for my paintings which have recently become large in scale, with cropped images of sections of ships merging into abstraction.” Waller works out of her two studios in Maine and Florida. Her paintings can be found in the permanent collections of American Victory Museum, Tampa, FL, Eli Lily and Co. New York, NY, Raymond James Financial, St. Petersburg, FL and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. [less-]

“Joy rides, voyages of discovery, surveys, wanderings, migrations, polemics, travel diaries, and assessment of the nation. Is America even imaginable without the road trip?” — David Campany The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility, freedom, discover, and escape — a place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. The Open Road explores the photographic road trip as a genre. It traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day. Beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal odyssey, The Americans, and including such renowned work as Ed Rushcha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Inge Morath’s The Road to Reno, Lee Friedlander’s American Monument, Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York. David Campany and Denise Wolff, curators. An opening reception, featuring complimentary wine, tea tasting and Bamboozle Cafe signature appetizers is Tues., Feb. 7, 6-9 pm. Erica Greskoviak & Jeff Scott artists are talented and imaginative in their unique approaches to art with their edgy, bright designs. Erica currently attends the University of Tampa where she was accepted into the R.K. Bailey Fine Art Studio. Previously, she studied at the DePaul Theatre School in Chicago, where she designed sets for theatre productions.  Erica’s art expresses her personal and unique visions of everything from portraiture to the circus to sea life.  Her art is formulated in layers of expression, much like murals providing the viewer with imaginative images of her universe.  Of her art Erica states, “There’s chaos with supplies and canvases lurking in every corner. My goal is to move forward as an artist and tackle as much as I can. I’m nowhere near done encountering things...every work of art has come from pursuing an historically important event.” Jeff Scott works primarily with acrylics. Influenced by his parents, the arts have always been a large part of Jeff’s life. Believing in the power of art as therapy he uses unique color combinations which are the inspiration and the starting point for each work.  He infuses both humor and darkness in his work. His artistic experience includes a 40 year career in the engineering field where he drew technical and precise drawings.  Says Jeff of his abstract art, which seems to explode from his canvases, “my art is a place where I am no longer bound by rules and accuracy, a wonderful stress reliever. It is as though I am staring at a camp fire, allowing myself to get lost in my own mind.”   For more information: contact Tim Gibbons Bamboozle Cafe gallery curator:tim@funkyasamonkey.com.   [less-]

[less-]
